Ride Four Mile Beach
Four Mile Beach is regularly voted into Australia's 'Best Beach' lists every year. The best way to really experience the iconic beach is by bike. Port Douglas Bike hire specialises in the right bike to head out on.
You can ride down to Four Mile Beach from the centre of town in minutes and then continue to along the sandy beach at your own pace under the tropical sun. Four Mile Beach begins at the northern rocky headland that is great beach for kids to explore or walk up to Island Point look out.
The wide sandy stretches are lined by coconut groves and populated by small crabs and native birds. The beach unfolds in a gentle curve that continues to the mangroves at the mouth of the Mowbray River in the south. Looking east over the glistening Coral Sea you can make out Low Isle on the edge of the horizon.
Riding down Four Mile Beach from town is great for exploring in your own time. There are many spots to stop and maybe throw in a line to catch a fish straight off the beach as well as plenty of access paths to help you get back to civilisation.
Toward the far end of the beach, just before it curves toward the Mowbray is a family park area that opens up at the suburb of Four Mile and Barrier Street. From there you can head back down the beach or follow the bike-path along Port Douglas Road to town.
